Welcome to the website for
Asgard Computer Services, LLC We wanted to
share a few tips every computer owner should know. We hope it helps.
- With all the identity theft out there it is good to remember not to give
out your personal information to any website without knowing who they are,
just because a website says they work with Microsoft, your bank, Paypal,
Ebay or other website does not mean they really do. if you receive an email
from one of these organizations with an attachment it could be an attempt to
compromise your identity, a big reminde, Microsoft has never and will never
email security updates to you.
The most forgotten computer cleaning task is physical cleaning, blow
the dust out of your PC with a can of air at least once every 3 months to
keep your machine cool and running its best . Buildup of dust, dirt, pet
hair, and other materials can seriously shorten the life of your technology.
I can't stress enough
the importance of performing backups. There are alot of different programs
for doing this. For a simple backup you can use a portable drive and copy
all files you want to keep (usually located in your my documents or on your
desktop) to the portable drive.
Spend a little more
money now to save you alot more in the future. If you spend the extra money
to buy a good quality surge suppressor you will avoid a majority of the
electrical issues which can cause physical damage to your Computer equipment.
Let's talk for a
moment about Daylight savings time. If you have a Windows XP, Mac OS X, or
2003 server and do your updates (automatic or manually) your clock will
change as it should since the companies released a patch to fix this issue.
However, If you have any windows before XP (2000 98, 95, NT, or OS 9 and
before) you will need to update when the computer thinks it needs to change
the clock for Daylight Savings time.
See your manufacturer or an IT professional like Asgard if
you are unsure how to do this.
your Windows mobile or other devices may need a software upgrade as well.We at Asgard Computer Services are often asked "what can do to
make my computer perform faster.
The biggest thing that affect performance are: the amount of memory your
system has (an easily upgradeable component in most systems), and keeping it
virus and spyware free. Run scans often to get the best performance long
term.
Are you thinking about getting a new phone to keep up to date with your
email at work? if so there are many things to consider: Blackberry phones
require redirectors to connect to Exchange Servers, Apple Iphones can now
connect to Exchange servers with version 2 upgrade and even Windows Mobile phones may require
you to add your company's SSL certificate to your phone so it will trust
your provider and connect.
For the maximum life and performance out of your PC run disk defragment
and Check Disk, these valuable tools can be accessed by opening My Computer,
right-clicking your Hard Drive and going to the tools tab. perform the Disk
Error Check first, this will take some time and will require a reboot of
your PC to begin. When you finish and re-login to your PC go back to the
tools tab and run Disk Defragment this puts pieces of files back close
together for faster file access.
A new growing
pastime among technical people is called war-driving.
War-driving
is where a person or group drives around town with a laptop, some
specialized software and maybe a long range antennae “sniffing” for
wireless networks.
When
these “wardrivers” find an unprotected wireless network, they
access the network and often map the location for other
war-drivers to find. This is why it is critical to use proper
security such as encryption if you are going to run a wireless
network.
